Focusing on Our Communities:
Using Photographs to Tell a Story

Collaborative Leadership Focusing on Our Communities is a process grounded in the theory behind several other techniques, including ABCD, Photovoice, Sacramento Streets, and Photo Realism. Through each of these processes, community members have the opportunity to identify and represent the gifts and challenges of their neighborhoods through photographs and writing. Using the camera as a notepad, participants are sent out to capture their community’s story.

Focusing on Our Communities empowers community members to document what it is important to them. The process engages policymakers and community members in addressing issues. It involves community members in an active way and facilitates recording community gifts and challenges.

Through interactive work, you will be introduced to a new tool to use in your community and you will have the information you need to promote dialogue and action.

Agenda Highlights:

  • Background on using photographs to tell a story
  • How the process can be used in communities
  • Logistics
  • FOCUS in practice
  • Focusing the story and taking it to community
  • Approaching policymakers
  • Telling the story
